Following an announcement from Business Secretary Alok Sharma and Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick, the moratorium on commercial landlords evicting tenants unable to pay their rent due to Covid-19 has been extended until March 2021.
Sharma and Jenrick have introduced this extension to build on further aid now available for businesses, including grants of up to £3,000 for businesses that must close their premises due to Covid-19 restrictions.
The government has, however, maintained that where tenants are able to pay their rent, they should continue to do so. They have also suggested that following the expiry of the moratorium, there will be a review of commercial landlord and tenant legislation.
This is going to exacerbate issues for commercial landlords who have not received rent for several months, and who may be having issues with their own funders.
Business owners affected by the pandemic will be protected from eviction until the end of March 2021, Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick announced today (9 December 2020).
